Sun of Blood and Ruin

by Mariely Lares

RATING: 4.5/5

I absolutely loved Sun of Blood and Ruin by Mariely Lares. This captivating novel immerses readers in a Mexican-Indigenous narrative set against the backdrop of Colonial Spain’s rule in the New World, enriched with elements of mythology and witchcraft. The vivid descriptions and inventive storytelling kept me on edge from start to finish.

The novel weaves historical intricacies into its fabric, particularly highlighting the clash between indigenous beliefs and the encroaching Christianity of the time. It’s a thrilling ride through love and betrayal, pirates and conspiracies, shapeshifters and demi-gods—every page brimming with excitement and depth.

One note for potential readers: if you’re not particularly comfortable with Spanish, I’d recommend opting for the physical book over the audiobook. I initially started with the audiobook but found that reading the physical copy allowed me to fully appreciate and understand the nuances of the story. Overall, Sun of Blood and Ruin is a richly textured and enthralling read that I highly recommend.
