Icebreaker

by Hannah Grace

RATING: 4.5/5

SPICE: 3.5/5

Icebreaker by Hannah Grace is one of those delightful surprises that proves not all TikTok-promoted books are just fleeting trends. This hockey romance novel stands out for its well-crafted narrative, rich character development, and a perfect blend of substance and steamy moments.

At its heart, Icebreaker is a story about Anastasia and Nate, whose chemistry is both undeniable and refreshing. The banter between them is sharp and engaging, making their interactions enjoyable and their relationship progression believable. Unlike many “enemies-to-lovers” tales that often rush the emotional arc, Grace takes the time to develop their connection gradually. Their romance unfolds naturally, with ample time for growth and memorable moments, avoiding the typical pitfalls of an abrupt transition from conflict to affection.

The character portrayal is noteworthy, particularly Nate’s perspective, which feels authentically male. This adds depth to his character and enriches the overall narrative. Additionally, the diverse cast of characters contributes to a more inclusive and engaging story, making the world of Icebreaker feel vibrant and realistic.

However, the novel is not without its flaws. The subplot involving Aaron, Anastasia’s figure skating partner, introduces a problematic element. Aaron’s abusive and controlling behavior is a significant source of tension, and while the initial decision by Anastasia to distance herself from him feels like a necessary and empowering step, the subsequent drama surrounding their reconciliation is drawn out and detracts from the main romance. This subplot, which becomes a focal point towards the end of the book, felt somewhat aggravating and disrupted the otherwise enjoyable flow of the story. For me, it was jarring enough to cause a pause in reading, as it overshadowed the book’s more engaging elements.

Despite this issue, Icebreaker remains a compelling and fun hockey romance. It offers a satisfying mix of eroticism and heartfelt moments, making it a standout choice for readers seeking a steamy and realistic portrayal of love and relationships within the world of sports. If you’re on the lookout for a captivating read this hockey season, this novel deserves a top spot on your list.
